Bellows - Darker Days

about

Bellows is Oliver Kalb and friends

It is a band that writes and records around New York state. The first Bellows record is called As If To Say I Hate Daylight. It was self-released in august 2011.

Its sound is delicate but erupts with frantic wobbling drums and large orchestral sections that defy the limitations of conventional pop and folk. The pejorative term "acoustic" is usually used to disparage music for not being energetic or uplifting-- Bellows is a band that resists those definitions, using a combination of acoustic instruments, amplified sounds and bursts of noise and feedback to create music that is visceral and positive.

The name Bellows came from a performance art piece I saw, for which normally passive patrons of the museum were instructed to scream into a microphone in the middle of a large room. The most interesting thing about the piece to me was the difference between the attitude of the bellowers before and after their shouts. Invariably, the person would approach the microphone smiling sheepishly at his friends, surprised at the audaciousness of what he was about to do -- he would then belt out his loudest, most primal yell but then fall immediately silent, suddenly ashamed at the act of expression
Bellows is meant to be my long-winded version of this post-bellow reaction. It is supposed to be a true and unadulterated bellow that doesn't fall victim to sheepishness or petty irony and which looks at the world earnestly and without preconceptions.

Bellows is a tall order that is meant to be encouraging and to be listened to and enjoyed by everybody.

Thanks for listening!

lyrics

Lazy day, someone calls me
I would like to see myself at a party across the room
wouldn't you?

Crazy night, did we not speak?
I close my eyes and see you
and you freak out
tall and loud, mean and proud

If your rain won't fall mine soon will
falling fast upon me like an anvil
on coyote, that's me
and fall I might and skin my knees
or sink beneath the surface 'til I'm buried
and fall I may into darker days

Racing through the morning, sleeping through the night
opening my eyes, dilating in the light
shivering my bones dry, shaking with delight
if God had sent his own sign it wouldn't look like mine
I am not my own priest and you have not been yours
fashionably distant, casually coarse
rationally wasted--the time is gone, of course
passionately razed but the weather's wrong, the time is gone

I do not want a solitary life, I don't want to die young
